Rearing for Food and Jobs (RFJ)
This Module is targeted at ensuring that there is rapid growth in the livestock sub-sector. This would result in immediate and adequate availability of meat and other livestock/poultry products in the country through improved productivity and intensification of targeted support to private sector service providers, livestock farmers and prospective livestock farmers. The campaign focuses on 5 key value chains; sheep, goats, pigs, poultry (chicken and guinea fowl), and peri-urban diary production.
The services on this Module are pillared on 5 strategies namely:
- Breeding Stocks; raising and distributing improved breeds for higher productivity
- Feed and Nutrition; finding alternative and nutritious feed sources and formulation
- Housing structures, plants and equipment; providing suitable equipment and tools
- Animal health; (ensuring availability of medication and veterinary services) and
- Marketing (providing linkage for market facilitation among value chain actors)
Interested farmers can access these services through the PFJ Desk officers or Agriculture Extension Officers/Agents in the district and regional agriculture departments in all 16 regions of Ghana. Farmers would have to register for their allocation of improved breeds with the department of agriculture. The implementation is a “Credit in Kind” one where farmers pay-back in kind with some of the off-springs which are distributed to other farmers to keep the program running.
